Rip Van Winkles Cure For The Ages

These days we baby boomers expect a lot out of life. Gone are the days of a sedentary lifestyle. We do not picture ourselves like our parents who practically expected an early demise after a few decades of hard work. Neither do we picture ourselves in Bermuda shorts and fishing all day. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but when we look in the mirror we still see that hot chick from years ago not somebody’s granny.

At eighty years of age we want people to gush over us and say, “Get out of here, I thought you were no more than 50. You look fabulous. What is your secret?”

To stay looking young baby boomers give the typical answer. I exercise, eat healthy and continuously renew my relationships with friends, family and spouse/partner.

Then we go and laugh to ourselves because we know the real secret. The easiest and cheapest way to feel strong, vibrant and renewed is to get a good night’s rest.

According to sleep-researcher Torbjörn Åkerstedt, “Sleep can be more or less efficient. If you sleep for a long time there is a risk that the sleep will be inefficient, and you just waste your time. In general it is good to be surrounded by light during waking hours (preferably bright sunlight), and darkness when one plans to sleep to adjust the biological clocks. It is currently a bit unclear how much sleep is needed per night, but four hours seems to be the absolute minimum for normal function. Normal sleeping time is 6 hours for adults, while the body will (if allowed) shift to an 8.5 hour sleep every night. There are no doubt individual differences, and the length of sleep is also dependent on our habits.”

It is true you may feel restless, so try these three things:

1. Get yourself ready for sleep by relaxing a few hours before bedtime — take a warm bath, drink some warm milk or herbal tea (decaf only).

2. Practice deep breathing.

3. Try a sleeping mist that you can spray on your pillow or linens before bed. Take a deep breath, hold it for as long as you can and then let it all the way out. Force all the air out as you relax and smell the aroma.

These suggestions are not instant cures, but they will definitely have you heading in the right direction. The main thing is you will be on your way to waking up refreshed. So, don’t let life pass you by because you are sleepy and tired. Reinvigorate your life with some good old-fashioned sleep.
